How to Make an Image Background Transparent (PNG)
Make an image background transparent online: get a clean PNG cut-out, keep hair and fine edges, and avoid format mistakes that add a white box.

To make an image background transparent, upload the photo to an AI background remover, let it cut out the main subject, and download the result as a PNG. The transparent areas are stored in the PNG's alpha channel, so the cut-out can sit on any colour, slide or web page without a box around it. With Photogenic AI's Background Removal tool this works in the browser, with no install and no manual tracing.
This guide explains the steps, the file format details that trip people up, and how to get clean edges around hair, fur and fabric.

What "transparent background" actually means
Most photos are stored as JPG files, which have no concept of transparency: every pixel has a colour. A transparent background needs a format with an alpha channel, which records how see-through each pixel is. PNG is the most widely supported option; WebP also supports transparency on the web.
That alpha channel is not just on or off. Around soft edges such as hair, the best cut-outs use partial transparency, so a few strands blend naturally into whatever you place behind them.
Step by step
- Open Background Removal in your browser. You can prepare the photo as a guest; sign-in is only requested when you generate.
- Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP. Use the largest, sharpest version you have.
- Generate the cut-out. The AI finds the main subject and removes everything else.
- Check the edges at full size, especially hair, fingers and any gaps between arms and body.
- Download the PNG and place it in your design, store listing or presentation. The result is also saved to your private Library.
Each result costs 1 credit, and new accounts get 3 free credits. Results from free credits carry a small watermark; paid credits give clean files.
Tips for cleaner cut-outs
Start with contrast
The AI separates subject from background more reliably when they differ in colour or brightness. A person in a dark jacket against a pale wall is easier than the same jacket against a dark doorway. If you are taking the photo specifically for a cut-out, choose a plain backdrop that contrasts with your subject.
Keep the subject sharp
Blur is the enemy of clean edges. A slightly soft outline becomes a soft, uncertain cut. If the photo is blurry, run it through Unblur & Sharpen first.
One clear subject per photo
Background removers look for the main subject. A single product or person in the middle of the frame gives the most predictable result. If something you do not want touches the subject, such as a stranger's shoulder, remove it with Object Removal first.
Check fine details
Hair, fur, lace, glass and thin straps are the hardest parts. Zoom in before you use the file. Semi-transparent objects like a wine glass may keep a little of the old background showing through, which is physically correct but can look odd on a very different backdrop.
Common mistakes
- Saving as JPG afterwards. If you open the PNG in another app and export it as JPG, the transparency is replaced with white or black. Keep it as PNG or WebP.
- Previewing on a white page. A transparent PNG viewed on white looks like a white background. Place it on a coloured layer to see the real edges.
- Tiny source images. A small logo or thumbnail has few pixels to work with. Use the original file where possible.
- Expecting text and logos to be cut perfectly. Thin lines and lettering can be cut out, but a clean vector logo is better recreated in a design tool.
When you do not actually need transparency
Many people remove a background only to put a new one behind it. If that is your goal, you can skip a step. Background Replacement swaps the background directly, with presets such as White Studio, Grey Studio, Modern Office and Bookshelf, and matches the light and shadow so the subject looks like it belongs.
If you want to keep the real setting but make it less distracting, AI Bokeh Effect blurs the background by depth like a portrait lens.
| Goal | Tool | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Cut-out for a design or sticker | Background Removal | Transparent PNG |
| White or studio background for a listing | Background Replacement | Full photo with new background |
| Softer, less busy background | AI Bokeh Effect | Full photo with blurred background |
For online sellers working on many photos, Pro subscribers can run one tool on 2–20 photos at once with batch processing. See product photos for a full workflow.
Honest limitations
AI background removal handles most portraits and products well, but it cannot read your mind about what counts as the subject. A person holding a bag, a dog on a lead, or two products side by side may be treated as one subject or split in a way you did not expect. Very busy scenes, motion blur and subjects that share colours with the background need a closer check. If a generation fails, the credit is refunded automatically.
FAQ
How do I make a background transparent for free?
Sign up and use your 3 free credits with the Background Removal tool. Free-credit results carry a small watermark, so for clean files for a shop or client work you will need paid credits.
Should I use PNG or JPG for a transparent background?
PNG. JPG cannot store transparency, so any transparent area becomes a solid colour. WebP also supports transparency and is a good choice for websites.
Can I remove a background on my phone without an app?
Yes. Photogenic AI runs in the mobile browser, so you can upload a photo from your camera roll, generate the cut-out and download the PNG without installing anything.
Why does my cut-out have a white edge?
Usually the source photo had a bright background that bled into the subject's edges, or the image was saved as JPG along the way. Try a sharper original, and keep the file as PNG from start to finish.
